King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Announce Free Melbourne Show

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are coming home for a string of huge shows across the East Coast in December, but ahead of the tour, they’ve announced a surprise for fans in Melbourne.

The prolific Aussie rockers will perform a free show at Federation Square this Friday, 24 October, and they’ll transform the Melbourne CBD into a rave. Yep, that’s right: King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard unscripted, raw, improvised, and electronic.

Frontman Stu Mackenzie teased, “Come on down. Freak out with us. You ain’t never seen this many patch cables in your life.”

The free, all-ages event marks the debut of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s rave shows in Australia, and their first show on home soil in over two years. For the one-off event, the band will be accompanied by special guest Merve.

As for what punters should expect from the show, fans on the King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Reddit have described the rave sets as featuring analogue synth set-ups, while the band also play guitar and drums.

In October 2023, the band released their 25th album, The Silver Cord, which marked a shift in their sound, focusing on synthesiser-based music. Ahead of the release of their 27th album, Phantom Island, which landed in June of this year, Mackenzie hinted that their follow-up album would be synth-focused and that an electronic album is “probably the next thing.”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will cap off 2025 with an Australian tour, where they’ll perform with local orchestras and play straight-up rock shows.

The band will perform at the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Princess Theatre with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl with Orchestra Victoria. They’ll also play rock shows at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall.
