King Gizzard & The Lizard WizardMelbourne's King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard lasted only eight minutes at the Secret Garden Festival over the weekend after the roof of their stage collapsed mid-set, narrowly missing a band member.
The New South Wales festival was inundated with rain on Friday and Saturday and the band have thanked festival staff for their reaction to the incident.
“To anyone who was at Secret Garden over the weekend: We are very sorry we were only able to play for eight minutes,” the band said. “The stage roof collapsed and almost chopped Cav's [drummer Michael Cavanagh] head off. Staff were super helpful and dealt with the situation well. Sorry Sydney!”
It is understood that a section of the roof became dislodged, causing a piece of the roof to hang down although a complete diagnosis is yet to occur.
Festival organisers closed the stage early during the event as the weather became increasingly dangerous.
Festival programmer Adam Lewis confirmed to theMusic.com.au today that there were no injuries sustained “and yep we closed the stage immediately – safety obviously being the number one priority for us.”
Lewis previously praised the understanding and helpfulness of the festival punters, saying the “behaviour of the audience was fantastic, people really rallied together and helped each other out in the rain, and the response from punters since the festival has been really positive.”
Police made a number of arrests over the weekend and issued a number of warnings to people, all for drug-related offences.
Approximately 6,400 people attended the Camden event across two days.
