It was only a matter of time before the seemingly-never ending scandals surrounding the upcoming Australian federal election were going to fall into John Oliver's lap and the Last Week Tonight host made his roast count on last night's episode.
Oliver touched on the controversies surrounding disgraced former One Nation senate candidate Steve Dickson ("Sexual Harassment Dundee"), as well as Jeremy Hearn, Wayne Kurnorth, Peter Killin, Luke Creasey and Ross Macdonald, but he saved his biggest serve for United Australia Party leader Clive Palmer.
Olive noted the similarities between Palmer and US President Donald Trump - "Arrogance? Check. Red tie? Check. He even has billboards with his campaign slogan 'Make Australia Great' which notably doesn't say 'Make Australia Great Again'" - and went in on Palmer's Titanic II project.
"In a way, Clive Palmer's Titanic II project is absolutely representative of his entire political platform in this election," Oliver said.
"Because while he's unlikely to win many seats, his pitch seems to be basically nothing more than, 'Hey, let's take a historic disaster and for some reason do it again, only somehow dumber, worse and in Australia this time.'"
