Jimmy BarnesThe world has lost a Hollywood icon: New Zealand actor Sam Neill passed away in Sydney on Monday (13 July). One of his closest friends, Jimmy Barnes, has shared an emotional tribute online.
Recognised for major roles in films such as The Final Conflict, Jurassic Park, Death in Brunswick, The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and much more, plus television roles in Merlin, The Twelve, Peaky Blinders, and The Tudors, Sam Neill was one of the most loved actors to ever come out of New Zealand.
Neill’s family confirmed his passing via a statement on social media on Monday.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia,” the statement reads. “Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
The statement continued, “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.

“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
Barnes posted four sweet photos of himself and Neill, including a cheeky picture of the pair in suits and three of the pair arm in arm, one of which was taken at the actor’s family winery, Two Paddocks.
He captioned the photos, “What a day it’s been. My dear friend Sam left us today. I can’t believe we will no longer be eating great food together and sharing the odd glass of wine down at his winery, while laughing, singing and solving the problems of the world together.
“Sam was a big part of our lives. He was family. He lifted our spirits when he walked in the room. Sam was everything he appeared to be on the screen. Caring, funny, intelligent, charming, honest, talented, the list could go on.
“He sat with me while I recovered in hospital and I sat with him when he needed me. We shared a lot in this life and for that, I will be always thankful. Rest easy, dear Sam. You are always in our hearts.”
Commenting on the post from Sam Neill’s family, Kylie Minogue wrote “Vale Sam,” while Cradle of Filth vocalist Dani Filth shared that he was “so sad” to read the news and described him as “One of the greatest actors of our time.”
Dom Dolla added, “What an incredible life and contribution, our thoughts are with you today and always. May he rest in peace.”
Actors including Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, Rachel Griffiths, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Danielle Cormack, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Sebastian Roché, and many others have paid tribute to Neill since news of his passing was announced yesterday.
