More Iron Maiden More Iron Maiden

Perth’s Macedonia Park stadium saw one of heavy rock’s icons take to the field over the weekend, ditching his Fender Precision Bass for a pair of football boots.

Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris showed off his English roots and joined in on a shared love of football, donning the red and yellow of local Perth team Stirling Macedonia FC.

Harris, who is 68, played on the adult team, with football and metal fans rejoicing in the bleachers.

“I just love playing football, any chance I get.” Harris told Nine News offside of the field.

“I’m not as quick as I was, of course. At my age, definitely not, so I dropped back to left-mid.”

When asked how his body was holding up after the game, Harris chuckled, “well, we’ll soon find out.”

The bassist successfully booted two goals in the game, before taking to RAC Arena on Sunday for Iron Maiden’s first Perth show in 8 years.

The Music writer Jake Fitzpatrick said of the band’s Perth performance:  “this is a band that clearly still has it. With a setlist spanning their illustrious career, a production that was nothing short of spectacular, and an electrified crowd, the evening was a testament to why Iron Maiden remains one of the greatest bands in rock history. One can’t help but feel lucky for what the rest of Australia has in store for them.”

Talking to Nine News, Harris stated that he’d try and pick up more community games on the tour.

“If I can do this; If I can play for other people, I’d play every week.”
