When Netflix and Hulu dropped their respective films almost simultaneously earlier in the year, it was battle of the documentaries in the US. Both tell the disastrous tale of the failed “luxury” music festival that was founded by Billy MacFarland and Ja Rule.
On its release in Australia in January, Netflix’s FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened went viral.
The major difference between the two lies in Hulu’s exclusive interview with MacFarland. The interview caused controversy when Netflix doco director Chris Smith alleged that MacFarland was paid a figure of $US250,000 to appear. Fyre Fraud director Jenner Furst confirmed to The Ringer MacFarland was indeed paid but said the actual figure was “less than that”.
MacFarland is currently serving a six-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud.
The Hulu documentary reportedly also goes “beyond the spectacle to uncover the power of FOMO and an ecosystem of enablers, driven by profit and a lack of accountability in the digital age”.
