Grievous Bodily Calm dropped their single Sprig Theme today (16 October), the first fresh release for the group since last year’s award winning Cascades EP.

The Perth (Boorloo) based favourites describe the new single as “the push to find something new, sitting in the tension of feeling nostalgia for a time gone by whilst also requiring the need to pluck oneself from these experiences in order to move into a positive future of newness and possibility.”

Sprig Theme certainly suggests a “future of newness” for Grievous Bodily Calm, especially if this single is any indication of upcoming releases.

If the Cascades EP was described as an “allusion to water”, Sprig Theme comes off more earthy, with a resonant guitar riff anchoring the composition.

While still containing the polished production and sweeping instrumental exploration that Grievous Bodily Calm has made their signature, Sprig Theme carries an underlying rock sound, something we haven’t yet seen the band explore.

The group does not shy from mixing genres, usually playing with jazz improvisation, hip-hop, and electronic production. But there is certainly more sonic territory for the group to traverse, with a new record promised for 2025 - their fifth feature length release.
