More Eminem More Eminem

Eminem’s most devoted fans will be in the spotlight of the new documentary film, STANS, which is set to premiere in cinemas worldwide in August.

A film about fandoms that explores Eminem’s long, successful career through the lens of his fans, the trailer features questions for the rapper, accompanied by flashes of him approaching the stage. The short teaser concludes with Eminem sitting down in a chair in front of a camera, seemingly for an interview, and asking, “What’s your first question?”

Check out the trailer below.

The synopsis notes that STANS will explore the complex relationship between the private rapper and his public persona. It adds: “Through stylised recreations, rare archival footage, intimate interviews, and an exclusive original interview with Eminem himself, it offers a raw, loud, and revealing journey across his career — and the passionate audience that has grown with him.”

STANS will premiere in the US on Thursday, 7 August, and will remain in cinemas for a limited time. In addition to the US, the film will air in 1,600 theatres worldwide on the same day. You can sign up here for more information about potential Australian screenings.

Directed by Steven Leckart and produced by Eminem’s own Shady Films, as well as DIGA Studios, Fuqua Films, and MTV Entertainment Studios, news of the STANS documentary first surfaced in February 2024.

At the time, it was reported that the documentary film would portray a “revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom” that would be told through the perspective of Eminem “and the fans that worship him.”

Eminem’s longtime manager, Paul Rosenberg, and Stuart Parr of Shady Films added, “Stans will be the opportunity for us to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fans — and in some cases, fanatics.

“This is a study of the relationship between fanbase and artist through the lens of one of Eminem’s most fascinating songs and one of the world’s most important entertainers.”

The documentary was inspired by Eminem’s 2000 hit single of the same name, Stan, which features the lyric, “I’m just like you,” and tells the story of an obsessive, unstable fan of the rapper’s music.

“Stan” is now such a common descriptor for the most over-the-top fans that the term was added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 2019 and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017.
