…And it’s not the Foo Fighters, surprisingly!

More Foo Fighters More Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl has opened up about some of his most treasured memories as a performer, revealing that his favourite band to play with isn’t one he’s actually a member of.

The monolithic multi-hyphenate is of course best known as the frontman of the Foo Fighters and drummer of Nirvana, but over the past three-and-a-half decades, he’s linked up with a slew of other bands. As well as his own outfits like Them Crooked Vultures, Probot and Chevy Metal (the lattermost being his hard-rocking cover band), he’s performed and recorded with the likes of Tenacious D, Late! and Queens Of The Stone Age. Even before he joined Nirvana, Grohl was involved with up-and-coming acts like Scream and Brain Damage.

Surprisingly, Grohl’s favourite band to perform with isn’t one of his own. In an archival interview with Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson – recorded in 2005 for his radio show Masters Of Rock – he revealed that he looks back most fondly on his time with Queens Of The Stone Age.

“The Queens Of The Stone Age gig, when it was Nick [Oliveri, bass], Josh [Homme, vocals/guitar] and I, we were badass man,” Grohl said (per Far Out). “That’s the best band I’ve ever been in in my life.”

Of course, Grohl didn’t leave his fellow Foo Fighters in the dust. He went on to describe his dynamic with the modern-day rock titans as being “like a family”, adding: “The three guys in the band are like my brothers and that’s a feeling I don’t get with anybody else.”

As for the groups he’d one day like to be a part of, Grohl said: “There’s a lot of people I’d love to play with. It’s just fun to jam with people. I was playing drums with Tenacious D in the studio the other day, that was great, it’s always fun to play with them. I have my fantasy bands, I’m just waiting for Metallica to call. I love being a drummer, cos to me I’m a drummer who’s pretending to be a singer-songwriter. That’s honestly the way I feel.

“I love doing what I do and I love Foo Fighters and standing at the front of the stage at Reading festival and making 60,000 people sing along – it’s awesome. I love drumming more than anything else and when I sit down at a drum kit I know that it was the thing I was put on this planet to do and I plan on doing it for the rest of my life.”

Just last month, Grohl made a surprise appearance at Coachella to perform with Wet Leg. When he’s not jamming with the biggest names in rock and pop, though, he can be seen doing things like cooking BBQ for the homeless in Los Angeles.

Also last month, the Foo Fighters announced their 11th album, But Here We Are. It’ll be their first release following Hawkins’ passing last March, and is due out on June 2. The news came after the band paid tribute to Hawkins in a touching New Year’s post, where they confirmed they’d be powering on as a band.
