Daniel Johns Could Face Jail Time Over Drink-driving Incident

After being charged with high-range drink-driving following a crash last month, Daniel Johns has been warned he may face jail time.

The Silverchair vocalist, who pled guilty this week, has been told by a magistrate that he could be jailed, as reported by The Guardian.

The drink-driving incident took place at night on March 23, when Johns crashed into a van in the NSW Hunter region after crossing over to the wrong side of the road while being three times over the legal alcohol limit.

The occupants of the van (a 51-year-old male driver and 55-year-old female passenger) were taken to hospital following the crash but were released shortly after.

As revealed last month, Johns checked into a rehabilitation centre the following morning, and so his lawyer entered a plea on his behalf in NSW court, during which the court was told the musician wanted to deal with the matter as soon as possible to alleviate the anxiety it was causing.

Johns’ request to deal with the matter immediately was denied with magistrate Ian Cheetham stating the seriousness of the offence could lead to jail time.

Upon checking himself into rehab, Johns issued a statement to fans on Instagram, revealing he had been “self-medicating with alcohol” to deal with “PTSD, anxiety and depression”.

“As you know, my mental health is a work in progress. I have good days and bad days but it’s something I always have to manage,” Johns said.

“Over the last week I began to experience panic attacks.

“Last night I got lost while driving and I was in an accident. I am ok, everyone is ok.

“Alongside my therapy, I’ve been self-medicating with alcohol to deal with my PTSD, anxiety and depression. I know that this is not sustainable or healthy.

“I have to step back now as I’m self admitting to a rehabilitation centre and I don’t know how long I’ll be there. Appreciate your love and support as always.”

It’s expected that Johns will be sentenced on June 22.
