Israeli cinematographer Vania Heymann is garnering strong praise around the web for his most recent produced work for beatboxer and YouTube identity Roy Kafri, bringing classic album covers to life — but he's taken it to a whole new level, one that sits loftily somewhere in the undeniable discomfort of the uncanny valley.
Where much has been made of Venezuelan artist Juan Betancourt's series of living covers, which he creates through the magic of animated .GIFs, Heymann — who also directs, writes, edits, you name it — uses video trickery and mad skills to make it appear as though long-dead figures on famous albums are beatboxing along with Kafri's track Mayokero, and the result is just a little unnerving (albeit impressive as heck, and, above all, very, very cool).
With appearances from albums by The Smiths, Simon & Garfunkel, ABBA, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Prince, Jeff Buckley, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Pink Floyd, Sonic Youth and many others, it's as much a bingo-card-worthy spot-the-album game as it is an inherently fascinating piece of work.
