UPDATE 22/09/23: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Napalm Death vocalist Barney Greenway made transphobic remarks during the band’s show. Greenway is passionately pro-transgender and his on-stage commentary was in support of the community.

While Boy George was in Brisbane touring with Culture Club and Berlin, the Do You Really Want To Hurt Me singer ended up watching grindcore heroes Napalm Death at The Triffid. And he loved it.

Attending the show on Tuesday, 12 September, Boy George witnessed Napalm Death playing tracks from nine albums and two cover songs, including Don’t Need It by Bad Brains and Nazi Punks Fuck Off by Dead Kennedys.

“Saw the noise monsters [Napalm Death] last night, and my ears are still ringing,” Boy George tweeted last week. “Loved all of the stuff Barney [Greenway, vocals] had to say.”

He added, “Totally tight band (no other way of saying it, lol). Hey Barney see you at the coffee counter! Comment of the night ‘shut up you fresh faced fucker’”.

Napalm Death finished their Australian and New Zealand tour on Sunday, 17 April, at Galatos, Auckland. Watching the band perform at Sydney’s Factory Theatre, Kill Your Stereo reviewer Mark Hebblewhite wrote that Napalm Death “have transcended being simply the kings of grindcore and have become a cultural institution in their own right.”

Culture Club concluded their Australian tour at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Thursday, 14 September.

Boy George and the band said in a statement, “Hello, you beautiful Australians! We’re so excited to announce that we’re going on our Greatest Hits tour this September.”
