The Avalanches are believed to be currently mixing down their long-awaited second album in Melbourne's Sing Sing studios.

After much speculation on a release date for the follow-up to 2000's Since I Left You debut, it was revealed during the week that the much-lauded Australian beat editors have been mixing down their new album for most of 2014.

During a studio tour of Sing Sing that was part of the annual Leaps & Bounds Music Festival's local music history bus excursion, a studio guide revealed that The Avalanches are currently mixing their album at the famed location and have been for "three or four months now".

Unfortunately for the tour group it was a day off for the outfit so no snippets of new material were overheard — Since I Left You received its final mix at Sing Sing back in 2000.

The last official new material heard from The Avalanches was in September when they released their remix of Hunters & Collectors classic new wave funk cut Talking To A Stranger.

The band's social media pages have fallen silent of late, having fired up speculation in the preceding two years. Followers had been reading into every post as a possible clue to a just-around-the-corner release date.

When the album does emerge, The Avalanches will boast a leaner line-up than appeared on the debut set, with Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi carrying the moniker as a duo - Darren Seltmann and Dexter Fabay having left to pursue other musical projects.
