Australian Idol has been rocked by a singer who auditioned using autotune machinery, with judge Kyle Sandilands going rogue and welcoming him to the next stage of the competition.
25-year-old Brisbane artist Bony recently auditioned for Australian Idol, performing GIRLS by The Kid LAROI. Without autotune – the judges asked him to sing without the machinery – he has a slick R&B singing voice.
With autotune, it’s fair to say that his performance was elevated (or not, depending on your taste), with a voice that sounds primed for radio. Perhaps that’s why Sandilands wanted him in the competition.
Sandilands went against fellow judges Marcia Hines and Amy Shark, who said no to Bony progressing further in the competitions than the auditions. However, last night (17 February), the singer was welcomed back by Sandilands, who said he went “rogue” and locked Bony into the Top 31 of the competition (previously Top 30).
Last night, Bony was not only brought back to the competition but also performed again, excelling with his take on Ariana Grande’s God Is A Woman.

Australian Idol returned to our screens on Sunday, 2 February. The current season has been described as “the toughest and most surprising” yet.
With the Top 31 decided, the singers must survive a “gruelling” week of challenges to reach the Top 21. They’ll undergo a “transformation” before the competition is narrowed to the Top 12. From the Top 12 onwards, the singers will perform live for viewers at home, who can vote to decide who gets through each round.
Country singer Dylan Wright won last year’s season of Australian Idol.
Wright won over Amy Reeves and fellow country artist Denvah Baker-Moller, taking home $100,000 in prize money and a recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment Australia. For his final performance, Wright brought out a performance of Elton John’s Tiny Dancer.
Following his win, Wright has consistently toured across the country.
