A new report has revealed that the conversation around pill testing at events across Australia is growing.
Last year’s National Drug Strategy Household Survey showed that almost three in five Australians supported “potential drug users being able to test their pills or other drugs at designated sites”.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare surveyed 22,274 people across the country for the report, with a shift towards education over law enforcement when it came to the preferred strategy of reducing the use of illicit drugs.
The survey also revealed an increase in recent use for cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, hallucinogens, inhalants and ketamine.
"In 2019, more than 43%, or 9 million, Australians aged 14 and over had illicitly used a drug at some point in their lifetime and 3.4 million (or 16.4%) had used one in the past 12 months," AIHW spokesperson Dr. Gabrielle Phillips said.
