The bassist has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication.

Robert Todd Harrell, bassist of radio rock favourites 3 Doors Down has been charged after an accident in Nashville on Friday night, local time, which resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man, AP reports.

Harrell has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after admitting to consuming hard cider and prescription Lortab and Zanax, a police statement says, after police reported he “showed indicators of impairment while performing field sobriety tasks”.

Police have also charged Harrell with bringing controlled substances into the jail, as he was found with 8 Xanax pills, 24 Oxycodone pills and 4 Oxymorphone pills concealed in his sock when searched in the police booking room.

The investigation thus far suggests the accident occurred when Harrell's car, which he was driving at “a high rate of speed”, clipped the pick-up truck of the now deceased, 47-year-old Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr. Shoulders then lost control of his vehicle, which struck a guardrail, travelled down an embankment and overturned. Shoulders, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr.  Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time."
