In February, Collingwood-based music venue The Gaso announced that it would close its doors this month, hoping it would find someone new to run operations and continue to operate.

Yesterday, the venue shared the bad news: the building owners rejected offers from people to take over operations of The Gaso, meaning that the live music space so many have come to know and love, will cease to exist.

Sunday, 30 March marks the final day The Gaso will operate as a music venue. The venue’s current operators urge the local music community to check its final gig listings on Oztix and keep an eye on its closing weekend programme. It also encourages punters to drink the venue dry and celebrate the fantastic times hosted by The Gaso.

The venue’s latest statement reads:

Dear Gaso Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we share our final update in regards to the future of The Gasometer Hotel. We were surprised and humbled with the amount of enquiries we received about taking over operations. Despite our best efforts and some solid offers put forward, the building owners rejected the offers, choosing to go in their own direction.

What does it mean?

As of the 30th of March, the venue that you’ve come to know, love, hang out at or danced all night in, will cease to exist. This is not the outcome we had hoped for, and we’re left disappointed that we are unable to pass the torch on.

So, we’re treating this as the end.

It’s a celebration of all of the things that we’ve been able to present, and experience over the last four years.

It’s been a true honour to have played a part in this iconic space, and in this incredible scene.

Check out our final gig listings on our Oztix, and keep your eyes peeled for our closing weekend programme. Please come drink us dry and celebrate the amazing times we’ve had together in this unforgettable venue.

With love and heartbreak,

The Gaso.
