The news is in: Australian music is the biggest it’s ever been on a global scale.

Spotify has unveiled local data to accompany its Loud & Clear report, released earlier this year, which reveals just how much Australian music has grown.

According to the data, Australian artists generated over $300 million in royalties on Spotify last year, marking a 14% increase on 2023 and a nearly three-times increase compared to 2017. Impressively, and as previously covered by The Music, Australian independent artists and labels amassed more royalties than those on major labels, generating over half of the royalties from the streaming giant.

Meanwhile, more than 80% of royalties generated by Australian artists last year came from listeners outside the country, solidifying Australian music’s global impact. That statistic has taken Australia to the top ten exporters of music. Backing that data is this number: in 2024, Australian artists were discovered by first-time listeners approximately 2.8 billion times.

In 2024, Australian artists’ music was streamed 57.1 billion times on Spotify, and Spotify users have made over 1.6 billion playlists featuring Australian music—over 99 million of those playlists have been created by local users.

Earlier this year, The Music outlined that within the report, it was discovered that nearly 1,500 artists generated over $1 million in royalties from Spotify alone last year. According to the streaming service, it wasn’t just household names that reached the million-dollar threshold.

The report stated that 80% of the artists didn’t have a song in last year’s Spotify Global Daily Top 50 chart, meaning that independent artists and acts outside the mainstream have found a way to thrive thanks to streaming.

The report also indicated that artists will make money whether they’re the 10,000th or 100,000th most streamed act on Spotify. For example, the 100,000th-ranked artist on the platform has seen a tenfold increase in royalties in the last ten years, from $600 to nearly $6,000 in 2024.
