Jude York ProfileThe Music chooses one song every week as its Power Pick, shining a light on ONE Aussie song that we think has the potential to be the next big Australian chart hit.
Our Power Pick committee consists of Richard Kingsmill (consultant and former triple j Group Music Director), Maddy Rowe (Nova nights announcer), Nic Kelly (Hit Network nights announcer), Ash McGregor (host of Listen Up with Ash McGregor), Kathy McCabe (News Corp National Music Writer), Brenton Larney (co-host of Breaking Through Podcast), Triana Butler (host on Joy 94.9), Matty Morris (Super Radio Network nights announcer), and Matt O’Gorman (Triple M Homegrown host).
We heard last week about how Aussies are killing it overseas, but struggling for recognition on home turf, and Jude York is the perfect example of someone Australia should and would get behind if he’s given some airtime.
He’s just done a sold-out UK and European tour, and after a string of well-received singles, we think this one is the best yet. Described in his label press release as “whimsical disco-inspired synth-pop”, the song was written with Swedish collaborators Nicki Adamsson (Tove Lo, NCT 127) and Litens (Icona Pop, John Newman).
It’s got a big chorus, big vocal and big hooks. It’s got a pop sheen made for radio and playlists and could be the mainstream breakthrough he needs. After performing at the TikTok Awards last year (as well as being nominated for Video of the Year) and hitting over 80 million streams across his catalogue, this year has been a big move up. Previous singles have had support from Joy and TikTok trending, but haven’t borken through with commercial radio networks…. yet.
Next year he’ll hit the road with Niall Horan for arena shows across Australia, so now’s the time to get on board. The perfect pop tune to smash over summer.
Here’s what Jude himself said about Afternote:
“Afternote really began as a love letter, written out of the fear that someone could move on without me, and relegate me to a ‘story they tell their friends’ - an afternote. It was a really scary thought. Ultimately this song is for anyone brave enough to ask to be someone else’s happily ever after. Every night on tour, I’ve been giving fans the opportunity to hand-write and submit secret love letters and it’s been magical to see how this song has already inspired the most vulnerable confessions. I’m so excited for the world to feel my most earnest love and joy through this new chapter - with love Jude x.”
