ThundercatIn case you missed it, frequent Flying Lotus collaborator and all-round musical mastermind Thundercat is dropping an album next week called Drunk and, boasting collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Kenny Loggins (on the album’s first single Show You The Way) and Pharrell Williams (as well as a bunch of others), it sounds like it’s going to be a bloody classic. Appropriately released just the day after Valentine’s Day, Friend Zone is the second single from the album we’ve heard thus far, and it’s Thundercat at his peak – both musically, and comically.
“I’m your biggest fan / but I guess that’s just not good enough” sings Thundercat on Friend Zone’s opening line, with his familiar, pitched vocals sitting at home above twisting melodies and funky basslines – expected from the Brainfeeder artist. “You stuck me in the friendzone / That’s that bullshit / I’m going to play Diablo either way / You can go or you can go” he humorously (and somewhat relatably) sings later on, before giving a nod to album collaborator Kendrick Lamar (“If you’re not bringing bottles I suggest you start to walk away / Bitch don’t kill my vibe”). Whilst there are hours and hours worth of loved-up Valentine’s Day slow ballads, there are not many with the opposite idea – one thing Thundercat is here to change, one funky bassline at a time.
