17 years ago (!) in 1999, The Blair Witch Project, one of the most successful independent films of all time, hit theatre screens and completely changed the horror genre, thrusting found footage forward as a terrifying new medium to shoot spooky content on and launching the Blair Witch as one of the genre's scariest characters. With the mysterious disappearance of that film's central characters left wholly explained, film fans were on the edge of their seats to find out just what had happened to them, and get a closer look at the eponymous Blair Witch.
A sequel emerged a year later to poor critical and popular reception, and was largely pushed aside and forgotten by fans of the original scarefest. Now, however, the Blair Witch franchise is getting a second chance to redeem the original film's terrifying brilliance, with the upcoming Blair Witch poised to continue on the story of The Blair Witch Project and elevate the scares to new heights.
Initially revealed at this year's San Diego Comic Con, and set to be directed by cult favourite horror director Adam Wingard, Blair Witch will return to the forest in search of the original's missing characters — taking film fans along for the thrill ride in the process.
