Ever growing Brisbane beat maestro's Superfluid have been rapidly making a name for themselves on the Aussie beat scene, and indeed it won't be long til the launch of their debut CD 8 Bit Crunch on top local label Creative Vibes. They also double up as Vextrex, an electro entity that's just started releasing on nine09 Records, debuting there with a split 12inch remix of English bass guru Tipper's wobbly single Donut. Head honcho of the outfits Neil Woodcock takes some time out from a busy day to have a quick chat in the lead up to not one, but three headlining performances within 24 hours.

How long has superfluid existed, how did it form and why

“Transmogrified in a haze of stoned Virtua Fighter brawling - SF have been boshing around since late 98. It's simply so a bunch of mates have an excuse to skive off work and call it ‘art.”

What higher musical power guides the group?

“Girls, games and an inherent desire to own one of those Bedazzler gadgies so we can highlight our official K-tel ‘I'm a rock star’ badges with faux rhinestones.”

How many members are in Superfluid, what do they play and what is your live set-up

“Five, No wait, six or is it seven? Gribbly is our resident musical genius boy who plays every instrument known to man, DJ Luke is our er, DJ *scriiitch*, Dri is our bongo bingling MPC bashing engineer, Abunai is a snuggly wuggly soft synth freak, I'm a keyboard and synth twiddler and love my laptop too leaving the Graeman who is our visuals shmoozer. For gigs we can reduce it to 2 laptops and an FX unit or go to town and bring way too much stuff depending on the venue and (more importantly) if we all manage to get days off at the same time.”

How is it being on Creative Vibes?

“CV are our favourite label in Australia by a mile and it is a dream come true to have a release next to the likes of The Bird, Multiball, Soup, Itchee & Scratchee as well as the licensed idols like Oizo, Amon Tobin, Laurent Garnier”

What's your favourite Aussie electronic acts of the moment?

“I absolutely dig Telemetry Orchestra, Zephyr Timbre, Chi-Q, George and that DJ Aniki is a top chap.”

Name your top three albums of all time?

“Macross Plus - Yoko Kanno, Blade Runner - Van Gelis, Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles.”

Where can you see superfluid going over the next three years?

“I'd like to see us become coke snorting prima donnas who wave our arms around like those African creatures that wave their arms a lot. Or we might just keep nerding along with our crusty gizmos having a larf doing the same crap until we go deaf.”
