PREMIERE: Alice Skye's '60%' Is An Ethereal, Emotional Tale Of Relationships & Anxiety

The tune is taken from the 20-year-old singer-songwriter's upcoming debut full-length, 'Friends With Feelings'.

More Alice Skye Alice Skye

Emergent singer-songwriter Alice Skye is on the path to BIGSOUND next month, preceding her outing at the Brisbane event by unveiling her intimate and soulful new single, 60%.

Taken from her forthcoming debut album, Friends With Feelings, 60% floats through on an ethereal, sparse framework built on Skye's eminently warm vocal tones and piano accompaniment, mixing in restrained percussion and the occasional E-piano run for good measure.

It's a sweet and sophisticated tune, the proud Wergaia woman having written it on a flight from Melbourne to Alice Springs — on the way to record her LP at CAAMA Music studios — as a means of taking her thoughts off how much she hates to fly.

"I did a lot of writing on the flight to Alice to distract myself from being terrified," she explained in a statement. "At the time, I was in a relationship where my anxiety was too much for the other person. So I had the line, 'Swim out to me, I sink everyone that gets close...'.

"It was actually a really hard thing to go through, and I think a lot of people would feel it in any kind of relationship. The feeling of wanting to talk and share things with someone but not wanting to overwhelm them. Not wanting to rely on someone... but, also, wanting to rely on someone."

Skye first caught national attention back in 2015 with her debut single You Are The Mountains, which buoyed her to bigger and better things including being a finalist in that year's triple j Unearthed NIMA competition, earning radio airplay and picking up management and label deals with Penney & Logan and CAAMA Music, respectively.

Now, she's set to win over a raft of new fans in Brisbane when she hits the town for BIGSOUND early next month as part of her label's showcase performance at Ric's, from 12.30pm on Wednesday 6 September.
