Retrospect launch Sent/Hayley at the Waterloo Hotel on Saturday.
2001 found Retrospect rise to the top to claim the title at the Queensland Rock Awards. In the time since the trio have been in the studio with local producer Caleb James (Rhubarb) to put the finishing touches on their second EP Sent/Hayley, which gets it’s official release this weekend.
“It was the first time we worked with a producer of his calibre,” explained frontman Joel. “Caleb is such a friendly person, down to earth and extremely talented. We all felt very comfortable in the studio and that formed a strong creative environment. After listening to the Rhubarb records we were very impressed with his work.”
How do the old songs stand up against your newer material? Do you think you’ve moved on far from the directions you took with the last recording?
“It’s hard for us to tell, The new songs stand out a fair bit with Caleb’s influence on the production and the maturity of the music puts the limelight on Sent/Hayley. Musically there is still life in the older tunes, I’m sure people who will get the EP will enjoy it as a whole.
What’s happening for the launch show?
“We have been working on a strong set of songs for quite some time and can’t wait to get back out there and play live. We have some great acts sharing the bill with us and the whole night from start to finish is a feature. There will be lights, loud music and big rock moves for sure.”

Joel is joined by his sister Jess (bass) in the band along with drummer Joe Ide. Is there ever any sibling rivalry in the band, and if so does it push the band’s dynamics?
“Oh yeah, it can get a bit complicated, but we are very close, when it comes to the music we try and put the small things behind, we are all very close Joe is like a brother too.”
What else is on the horizon?
“Hopefully this CD will open a lot of doors for us. We would love to venture further than South East Queensland and get our music heard in other parts of the country. We might stretch our wings and do some shows further abroad in the near future.”
Any famous last words?
