It's not often a band openly admits to an inception that was, ahem, "incestuous". Vocalist and guitarist Julian Cartwright explains that "Red Gazelle began rather incestuously. Cam [Revell, guitar] and I had played in a band called Oryus and Dave [Schneider, drums], Simon [Skipper, bass] and I played together in a band called Cutwing. Actually all of us played in Cutwing for a period. When the bands broke up I just glued us together!"
Their self-titled EP was recorded at DefWolf Studio in Alexandria with Daniel Antix: "We played a show Daniel was mixing and he chased us from that point on! We took 14 songs into the studio and intended to cut it to five. We fought heaps about which tracks to use but we had a common seven, which makes it a long EP but we're proud of the songs and how they work together as a release."
But the process wasn't without a few hard knocks. "I had a motorcycle accident during the recording that set us back a bit. I broke a rib and bones in my hands after a driver pulled out into my street without looking, which was a bit rude. Vocal sessions were a bit uncomfortable but we got through it."
Cartwright's personal fave from the record is "Damascus — I love the vibe of it and the riff just makes me want to jump around. I really enjoy the lyrics on it as I got to explore some insecurities and ask some questions around my search for purpose in life. The chorus harmonies are also a highlight".
