There's an incredible amount of new names being welcomed to Australia's ever-growing hip-hop scene every moment, and while they certainly span a vast range of sounds and sub-genres, they're all connected in that they're creating stuff really quite different to anything you would hear coming out of Australia in the years past, moving beyond that 'Aussie hip-hop' tag that has come to somewhat plague and unfairly group rising rappers over the years. We've spoken about this new generation a lot - from big, trend-creating names like Baker Boy and Genesis Owusu to those a little smaller, like Masked Wolf or Alex Parkman - and it seems that every week we're spotlighting someone new.
This time around it comes from Sydney, with African-Australian rapper Yung Dready Mane. On a local level, he's become a force to watch over the last few years, but with his latest single (last year's Nasa), he started to find a national break-out, topping on the triple j Unearthed chart and getting a couple of spins in the process. High On You, premiering today, is bound to see this continue, uniting this hazy and washed-out production thick with these bassy, trap-adjacent kicks with his vocals that like the production, offer this murky and somewhat mysterious flow, channelling the more lo-fi trap/hip-hop wave holding particularly strong in the US. It sets Yung Dready Mane as an artist to watch within our bustling hip-hop scene, and with his debut album Fashion Show out later this year, we have no doubts that he's going to live up to the promise he shows on its latest tease.
