Naarm/Melbourne four-piece soul pop outfit Velvet Bloom are ending 2024 in a big way, releasing their latest single Best In You alongside the announcement of their eponymous debut album.

The new single (which officially arrives on Thursday, November 14th), follows on from a handful of tracks released in previous months, including My Love and Silver Tongue. and arrives as a track written by Maddy Herbert as a way to uplift her spirits. As she explains, it's an exercise in seeing the best in your loved ones even during their worse moments.

“When you know people well enough (yourself included) you are exposed to their best and worst qualities,” she explains. ”Best In You is about showing compassion to the ones you love when they mess up forgivingly.”

While Herbert steps into the producer role for the new single, collaborator and band member Alex Marko takes on engineering and mixing duties, with composer and saxophonist Brennan Hamilton-Smith helping to elevate the track with some freshly-minted horns.

“This is the first Velvet Bloom track to incorporate horns – we were lucky enough to have Brennan Hamilton-Smith and Ben Harrison (trumpet) on board to perform these compositions,” Herbert explains.

“I loved stacking the vocal harmonies around the horns with Jay and Alex because we had to be a lot more strategic about placement than we usually are.”

Alongside the release of the track, Best In You also comes accompanied by a music vide created by Velvet Bloom and visual artist Rhys Newling, incorporating the lighthearted aspect of the single and filtered through the exuberant chaos of St Kilda’s Luna Park.

“We wanted to do something fun as a group and invite our audience to this experience by filmingon our handy-cam,” says Herbert. “All of us had nostalgic memories of enjoying this theme park with lovedones when we were young, so shooting the ‘Best In You’ film clip there felt like a good way tocapture the song’s essence.”

Best In You – alongside My Love and Silver Tongue – will all appear on Velvet Bloom’s eponymous debut album, which is set to arrive on March 28th, and looks to showcase the immersive, kaleidoscopic approach that the band bring to their music as they explore a myriad different genres and styles.

“We have dedicated the past three years of our lives to the creation and release of our debut album,” said Herbert. “We have really refined our sound throughout the making of this body of work, pushing ourselves and each other to achieve something that we are all incredibly proud of.

“This album draws inspiration from soul classics and modern alternative-pop, while blending genres like folk, funk, neo-soul and indie-rock into the mix. I couldn’t be more grateful for the band, community and other artists and collaborators who have contributed countless hours to each aspect of this project.”

Velvet Bloom will also be celebrating the launch of Best In You with a special launch show at Shotkickers on November 21st, supported by Wild Gloriosa. Tickets to this show on sale now, while Best In You is officially released on Thursday, November 14th.
