"The video features short glimpses of archival footage showing us doing our thing as early as 2008, to drive home the message that there are no barriers, there are no gate keepers – we are the proof!,” explains vocalist Sam Octigan.

As Naarm/Melbourne hardcore icons Iron Mind ready themselves for a run of shows and a new album, the group have unveiled the video for their latest track, How You Get Down.
Emerging in 2009 with their The Sun Has Set EP, Iron Mind have since occupied a well-regarded place within the Australian hardcore scene. Despite albums like 2011’s Hell Split Wide Open and their 2014 self-titled effort arriving to wide acclaim, it’s been a little quiet in the ensuing decade.
While the band went from touring with names like Turnstile, Terror, No Warning, and Harm’s Way to a relatively quiet life, they’re still definitely active, albeit a little less so. Alongside annual homeground shows, the band returned with new material in 2023 and have since moving towards the release of a new record. That record, Test Of The Iron Mind, will be released on June 13th.
Announcing their forthcoming album just a few weeks back, the group are now getting ready to hit the road with a national tour which kicks off on the day their album arrives. To get folks in the mood for what’s coming, they’ve now shared the intense video for the track How You Get Down.
Directed by Iron Mind with Jack Rudder, the blistering cut is accompanied by a visual representation of what it’s like to get down in the midst of an Iron Mind crowd. Unrelenting, ferocious, and ultimately cathartic, it shows the power of the band’s music and the communal nature that it inspires – all the while showing fans just what their upcoming run of gigs will be like.
“The song’s title was pulled from a mid-set statement captured on film back at 2014’s Break The Ice Festival,” explains vocalist Sam Octigan. “The video opens with this footage as a flashback of sorts, as an exclamation that this has always been our message, before slamming into the new track and current footage, shot on our run of shows in March of this year (including a sold out show at The Tote).

“Nothing has changed, the video features short glimpses of archival footage showing us doing our thing as early as 2008, to drive home the message that there are no barriers, there are no gate keepers – we are the proof!
“We didn’t let anyone stop us demonstrating our style, despite starting with humble beginnings – we didn’t wait to be invited into the cool club, the inner circle, we just did our thing and paved our own way,” adds Octigan. “Now here we are passing on that message to the next generation.”
Tickets to Iron Mind’s upcoming tour are on sale now. Meanwhile, the Test Of The Iron Mind will be released on June 13th, with pre-orders available now.
