Western Australia’s indie-rock duo, Old Mervs, are hitting the road to celebrate the release of their highly anticipated self-titled debut album, which dropped on 21 March 2025. From May through July, they’ll bring their new music to life across 20 stops throughout Australia and New Zealand—spanning from coastal towns to bustling capitals and everywhere in between.

Take a look at the exclusive album diary penned by David House and Henry Carrington-Jones, filled with photos and personal reflections from the making process - photography by Annie Lila:

Exploring around the joint

One of our favourite photos of the area, on our way back from the Bottle’O, headed back to the studio and saw a ripper view we couldn’t miss getting a photo of with some good-looking Jerseys roaming the hills.

Tracking for Parched

Having fun adding layers to Parched, one of our favourite tracks of the album, probably the most fun to record. We spent a lot of time adding bits and pieces and thinking of ways to make the song its best self. [Producer] Chris [Collins] is a godsend for us when it comes to this, as well as all his other talents and work! Fair to say he’s instrumental in the process.

Drum tracking

This was the first bit of tracking we did with any cameras, it was nice to have someone in the room and a great friend of ours in Annie; she got us some wine, and it added a really fun boost for the mid week blues!

Steering the bus

We needed room for boards and, more specifically, a log we had borrowed for the trip, which meant a two-seat cargo van! We got sick of driving up the hill to the studio, but it was also a great drive.

Working hard or hardly working

We spent a lot of time outside taking breaks and chatting with Chris or the odd visitor, like our mate Roy [Kellaway] from King Stingray, who helped with some backing vocals. Coffee, beer, wine and chess were all undertaken here as well as a t-bone steak on coals the last day!

The federal general store

One of the many trips up the hill to the Federal General Store, this day was lolly day. The two-seater cargo van meant taking turns in the back with the boards!

Playback time

The most satisfying part at times was listening back to a tracked song/desk bounce. Always nice to hear the song from its early stages of recording and mixing after many listens to horrible quality shed recordings…

Bashin’ out some vocals

One of the best parts of the process is usually one of the last things to really complete the majority of the song before the final touches. We love being able to have the song laid out and be able to hear it and start to get excited.

Deemed as one of 2025’s most exciting debut releases, the 11-track Old Mervs LP weaves effortlessly through sun-soaked indie and dreamy ‘90s West Coast alt-rock vibes. Their latest singles have already racked up over 3.5 million streams and landed spots on triple j as well as major playlists across Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.
