Meet The Musos: Get To Know Dreamy Indie-Pop Star George Alice

At only 20 years old, George Alice has solidified herself as one of Australia’s leading indie-pop singer-songwriters hailing from South Australia. 

Leaving her teenage years behind her and embracing early adulthood, George is ready for her new music season with the single Healed out today (June 23).

Healed is an energetic, yet meaningful number featuring George’s classic emotional songwriting resulting in yet another melodic earworm for fans to enjoy. 

This is the first piece of new music since George returned from international songwriting trips in Los Angeles and London and has come just in time to be played live as George is about to embark on a huge National tour with Aussie rock legends, King Stingray, this June/July.

Of the single, George says: “Healed I feel is the first step into the new George Alice universe. After finding my feet a little more within my career this allowed me space to explore fun styles I’ve always wanted to experiment with and match the energy of music I listen to." 

"With Pink Pantheress being such a big reference for a lot of artists at the moment I wanted to incorporate that fun energy into a slow piano ballad about heartbreak."

"Making Healed with Chrome Sparks and Hamish Patrick over a long period of time, in such an elevated and energising way, made me feel like I had finally healed from the things I was writing about a few years ago when this song came to life."

She added, "Getting to adjust the point of view of a song whilst writing and finishing it is something I hadn’t experienced before until well after the song was out in the world."

The attitude and sass you feel post-breakup are a true reflection of what Healed is all about. I hope this song makes you dance with the people you love, and helps you heal if you haven’t quite done that yet.”

The last few years have been a wild ride for George Alice. In 2019 at just 16 years old, she was quickly thrown onto the Australian music stage having won triple j’s famous Unearthed High Competition for her debut single Circles.

Since then, she's gone on to sign a global record deal with US tastemaker label Loma Vista Recordings, released an EP Growing Pains that has clocked over 40 million streams and counting, has performed headline shows across the country as well as supported the likes of Yungblud, Vera Blue, The Veronicas and played major Festivals such as Laneway, Vintage Vibes, Rolling Sets, and SummerSalt.

At the end of this month, George is also set to embark on a national tour with The Yolŋu surf rock outfit, King Stingray, with support from George Alice and Old Mervs, will take to the road in June and July, stopping in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane.

“I’m super excited to be headed on tour with King Stingray this July," she said of the forthcoming tour.

"Tne and July. I’m such a fan of their work so to be sharing the stage with them all over the country is a huge honour. This tour comes at the perfect timing alongside the release of my new song ‘Healed’ - which I think will be a super fun addition to my live set and I cannot wait to share it with everyone.” . 

In celebration of her new single Healed, we had a chat with George Alice to find out everything you need to know about the dreamy indie-pop star.

Give us the story behind your name?

I chose this name when I launched the project at 15. It's a mix of my childhood nickname George, and Alice in Wonderland. I wanted to reference Alice In Wonderland and create my own universe with my music and my fans. A safe space to unapologetically be yourself and say all the mushy things you feel. 

If your music was a flavour, what would it taste like?

Strawberries and cream 

Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your own sound and style?

I grew up listening to Adele, her album 21 taught me how to sing. I think I carry parts of her lyricism to this day. 

I also love Gracie Abrams, who I think is a big reference for the music I’ve been working on lately, alongside Sabrina Carpenter

What’s been the biggest moment in your career so far?

I got a phone call in the middle of the night on my way home from a show to support Yungblud the next day in a Melbourne arena, which was pretty cool. Elton John also gave me a shoutout on his rocket show which was super surreal. 

What's the most unusual or unexpected source of inspiration you've drawn from when writing a song? 

I was on a flight when I was 16, the couple set next to me were oozing love and puppy dog eyes for each other. The person next to me had a Polaroid of them kissing as their bookmark, so I wrote their entire love story and took it to my session, and wrote a song about it. 

Can you share a hilarious or cringe-worthy moment from your early days as an artist?

At my first festival, I had no idea how in ears worked, so when I couldn’t hear the music playing but could hear the front of house and crew talking to each other in my ears I didn’t realise that was a mistake and shouldn’t happen lol

I’m a dog mum to a beautiful lil English bulldog named Dustin <3

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

At the moment it would be Emails I Can’t Send - Sabrina Carpenter. There’s a song for every mood on there and I think how an album sits so perfectly in my ears 

What's in the works for you in 2023?

I’ve been in the States a lot writing new music and I’m so excited to finally be starting to share that with everyone. I hope for a lot more shows with a lovely new setlist.
