Part Janet Jackson part Billie Eilish, TIAAN's new single has a whole lot of swagger..
Last month we spent a bit of time talking about songwriters and producers seen typically behind-the-scenes and how in 2019, these names are stepping forward and thriving with their own projects. LA-via-Sydney musician TIAAN is one well within this realm of musician, working behind-the-scenes of singles by Charli XCX, Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea while also working on her own project, which initially broke out way back in 2014 with a debut EP which proved quite the success. The time since, however, has been comparatively quiet, working mostly on other projects while slowly chipping away at TIAAN's new era. Now arrives its first taste with Ruin It - her first single in around five years and one that hopefully will set the now-LA-based musician right back on top.
Summarising a rocky few years, Ruin It is a genre-bending return to glory built around this dark and mysterious sound, uniting the R&B swagger of her biggest influences in Janet Jackson and Sade with this innovative pop twist, brought forward through acts à la Billie Eilish. On Ruin It, TIAAN's vocal sways alongside a versatile production which never entirely sticks around long enough to be completely fleshed out - keeping you on your toes as it swerves from hazy, soul-infused melodies to bright synth stabs and quick-firing vocal sampling at the drop of a hat. There's a lot to love about TIAAN, so before she blows up once again, dive into Ruin It's explosive video clip and get to know her a little better below:

Iʼm a singer, songwriter and artist. I grew up on the northern beaches of Sydney. Iʼve performed all over the world, written with top artists, writers and producers. I’m currently living in Los Angeles after living in Stockholm, Sweden for a year to create my first EP.
Whatʼs the vibe music-wise?
Itʼs alternative pop/R&B. Very sexy, vibey and raw.
What are your production and writing processes like?
It’s different each time and totally depends on who I’m working with, the energy of the song, and what mood I’m in, but I generally like creating from scratch with the producer or musician, especially if Iʼm working with someone new. I donʼt like just being “shown beats”, I find it so impersonal. I can always go into a session with ideas, but I find it cleaner to start something together.
Can you tell us about your latest single, Ruin It?
Ruin It was written with two of my faves: Cameron Neilson and Nash Overstreet. It actually started as a pretty heartfelt sad-ish love song and then we decided to fuck it up and make it sassy. It was a big deal for me to release Ruin It as I had been stuck in a poorly structured deal for a few years and had to put myself on the back burner and write for others to keep going in the industry while I was stuck. So four years after my last release Ruin It came out! With a pretty rad video if I do say so myself haha!
Youʼve worked behind the scenes with some incredible names – Charli, Britney, Iggy and so on. How has that shaped or helped out your own music project as TIAAN?
I think itʼs really helped actually, by having songs released in other genres, I write and sing in many different ways, but unfortunately, we need to really stick to one vibe to make sense to a lot of people. So I can have my cake and eat it too by working with others in different styles and not feel like Iʼm being trapped in a box of alternative pop/R&B.
What does 2019 have in store for you?
Well, I started it off with a release after what felt like a lifetime and a Billboard dance club charts #1 with a song I co-wrote Donʼt Need Your Love by Bleona, so hoping it goes up from there haha! I would love to continue what Iʼm doing on a larger scale and possibly tour!
Where can we find more of your music?
Itʼs on all platforms TIAAN OFFICIAL.
