Have You Heard: Madeline Leman

Answered by: Madeline Leman

When did you start making music and why? I have musical parents who played in hippy folk bands so I grew up being inspired by Paul Kelly's storytelling and Joni's vocal melodies. I've always sung and started writing songs at 17.

Sum up your musical sound in four words? Retro, fun, soulful, twangy.

If you could only listen to one album forevermore, what would it be and why? Oh man! I never get sick of Bonnie Raitt's 1974 album Streetlights. The warmth in her voice made me cry the first time I heard it and the band is killer. It's 1970s Americana perfection.

Greatest rock'n'roll moment of your career to date? Making friends with Eilen Jewell when we played Mullum last year was definitely a career highlight. She came to our show on the main stage and I nearly peed my pants. I'm not sure how 'rock'n'roll' that is.

Why should people come and see your band? We play songs about strong women and our live show is a mix of raucous twang and intimate storytelling.

When and where are your next gigs? 6-9 Jul, Bello Winter Music Festival; 17 Aug, Retreat Hotel.
