Across the past twelve months, we've spoken endlessly about the rising talent within the WA music world and the many pockets of brilliance it includes, whether it's in hip-hop through a growing next generation, the more band-esque sphere that spans from metal to dizzying indie-pop, or in the consistently brilliant pop and electronic worlds that have proved dominant when talking about the next generation of Australian talent. It's nice, however, to see this recognised on a national scale, and one group doing this is Falls Festival, who in their 2019/2020 lineup, is seemingly diving into the depths of West Australia's emerging brilliance.
On their first lineup - topped by Halsey, Vampire Weekend and Disclosure - Perth ex-pats Crooked Colours found themselves amongst the festival's mid-tier billing as did Psychadelic Porn Crumpets, while on the lineup's second announcement two months ago, West Australia's contingent grew, with local punk-rock legends Sly Withers stepping up to join the bill amongst a lineup that seemed to showcase the next generation as a whole, via B WISE, A Swayze & The Ghost, Adrian Eagle and BIGSOUND favourites Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers.
Now, however, with their third lineup - arriving today ahead of the festival's commencement in around six weeks from now (!) - Falls Festival's deepening West Australian talent is growing yet again, and it's aiding the next-ups of the state who otherwise, don't typically find themselves on lineups of this calibre without triple j Unearthed Winner slots. On the east-coast, acts including Northeast Party House, Alex Lahey, Miiesha, These New South Whales and others join the bill, but in Fremantle, the lineup grows by three: Butter, Gazey and Jack Davies and the Bush Chooks.
Together, these three acts highlight the cross-genre brilliance of Perth's music scene and how - finally - big-name east-coast industry heavyweights are tapping into the gold mine, extending much further than nabbing an already-established drawcard à la Tame Impala (which is where many other festival's involvements with the WA music scene caps off). Butter, with their King Krule-comparable lo-fi hip-hop sound, is quickly becoming something special - as we found for ourselves a few months back - while Gazey and Jack Davies are amongst two of the state's greatest, the latter shining with their charming songwriting and storytelling capabilities, while the former is one of Perth's go-to acts amongst the live circuit.
Soon, we'll no doubt see acts like these join Psychadelic Porn Crumpets across greater national bills, but for now, dive into the Falls Festival 2019/2020 lineup below, packed full of new additions:
