With another Electronic Music Conference (EMC) just around the corner, there’s no better time than now for the powerhouse event to announce their first speaker lineup for 2017. Taking place on November 29 - 30 across a couple of new Redfern locations (Giant Wharf, Cake Wines Cellar Door and The Work-Shop), the event brings together a diverse group of music-loving amateurs and professionals for a series of panels and workshops, as well as the much-loved EMCPlay, which showcases the best rising electronic stars in Australia.
Pioneering the 2017 edition of EMC is renowned English DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall. The ‘In Conversation’ session will see the icon discuss how this genre has transformed over the past thirty years, from on-and-off trends to how the industry has changed. Conference-goers will also get the chance to hear a few words of wisdom from General Manager of Future Classic Anna Burns, onelove’s Ant Celestino, Travis Grech from Ultra Australia, FBi Radio’s Music Director Amelia Jenner, and homegrown artists like Tigerlily, Touch Sensitive and Miss Blanks, along with many, many more (full list below).
When it comes to discussing topics that are timely and necessary, EMC always has its finger right on the pulse and this year is no different. There seems to be a strong, much-needed focus on creating diversity in the music industry, seeing sessions like The Cultural Appropriation Tightrope, Conscious/Unconscious Gender Bias, Safe Spaces and You’re The Voice; Electronic Music And The Marginalised pushed to the forefront; classic industry talk from Indie Labels: Taking The Power Back, Where The Streets Have No Name; Parties Off The Radar and When Beats Just Don’t Match; Mental Health In Electronic Music; and a particularly Aussie twist on things with Kicking Goals In Your Own Backyard and Our Festival Scene’s Homegrown Heroes.
