"I like to converse with the people around me. I find it can help a lot to step away and come back fresh."
You'd be forgiven if you like Byron Bay musicians with Ben Harper and Jack Johnson-esque beach acoustic, but Dane Birks aka Dos Boy hails from the surf-and-yoga region with his own brand of diverse rhymes and punchy rap.
"Growing up in Byron, I was exposed to a variety of music from a young age, so I figured out quite early [that] this was my passion. In order to expand on the limited opportunities in my hometown, I have recently re-located to Melbourne to pursue a career in music," says Birks of his roots.
His single Edith Cowan was engineered by ARIA-winning and Platinum record-selling Melbourne producer Cam Bluff, who has worked with other hip hop artists such as Illy, Hilltop Hoods, Seth Sentry and Allday. "I recorded in Cam Bluff's studio because I am extremely confident in the engineering of Cam and his partner Dom Cork. I've heard and been impressed by a lot of product that has come from that studio, so I chose to work with the best engineers available for this song," says Birks.
The move from the surfy vibes of northern NSW to the inner city chic of Melbourne inspired his song writing along the way: "Breaking away from my home town and moving to Melbourne to pursue music and make a better life for myself through music was my main inspiration for [Edith Cowan]," he confirms. His "tight circle of friends" are highly important to the young musician, and he uses them as inspiration. "I am definitely the kind of person who enjoys the company of other people. So if things aren't working for me, whether it's writing or recording, I like to converse with the people around me. I find it can help a lot to step away and come back fresh."
