D'oh D'oh Doughnuts

Mmmmmmmm dooooooughnuts. We check out four of Melbourne's best.

To coin a phrase from one of the greatest philosophical minds ever produced by humanity, Homer Simpson: "Mmmmmm, doooughnuuuts".

Sweet-toothed fads come and go (remember cake-pops, nitrogen gelato and dessert pizzas?), but come what may, doughnuts are an indestructible, evergreen trend. In our humble opinion, there's nothing better than chomping into a warm, doughy ring of sugary goodness, but for those of you with more refined tastes, the humble doughnut has proven to be a powerful source of inspiration for Melbourne's artisan bakers. Let the drooling commence!

Aside from the fact these insanely good creations are made by a 15-year-old patisserie prodigy, Morgan Hipworth, these yummy treats are only cooked in small batches to ensure they're as fresh as humanly possible. Grab yourself a Ferrero Rocher - dipped in dark chocolate, filled with Nutella and topped with crushed Ferrero Rocher, or a Peanut Butter, Jelly & Popcorn, which does exactly what it says on its delicious sounding tin.

They describe themselves as "an Aussie bakery with an American twist and a dash of European influence", but they add much more than a dash and a twist to their creations. All the usual bakery suspects are available, but in 'extravagant' doses (think s'mores pie and Reuben Sandwiches). They even have the classic Simpsons pink doughnut (berry glaze), passion fruit pavlova glazed donuts, chocolate crackle glazed donuts and more if you're feeling something a little fancier.

Don't be fooled by their shmick fit-out; Tivoli Road Bakery know how to make a dirty-great doughnut that will probably give you a sugar-hangover. Marvel at their monstrous vanilla slice glazed doughnuts (there is so much filling that they don't even look like donuts), chocolate custard doughnuts, lemon curd and salted caramel. Get them in your face, stat!
