'These Guys Are Leading The Charge': Birds Of Tokyo Name Their Favourite Perth Bands

26 March 2021 | 3:16 pm | Birds Of Tokyo

Perth legends Birds Of Tokyo are playing a hometown show at Hotel Rottnest this 11 Apr thanks to Coopers' Live, Loud & Local. Since the boys don't actually need any introduction themselves (beyond winning ARIAs and going 2x Platinum, they're one of triple j's three most played artists of this millennium. People have heard of 'em) we asked them which other artists in the Perth scene they love right now.

Methyl Ethyl's output has never disappointed. I must admit I initially brushed over their early EPs, but their debut album Oh Inhuman Spectacle hooked me in, and even that barely scratched the surface of what was to come. Everything Is Forgotten is one of my favourite albums with the masterful No. 28, but every track is a gem. Triage continued a great streak and last year's EP Hurts To Laugh is a cracker too.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. They just take me to outer space. Growing up listening to Smashing Pumpkins, MBV, Black Sabbath, etc, I always saw music as a vehicle for interstellar mind travel and these boys are my current Uber ride through the fuzzy stars. Five stars.

Methyl Ethel. Oh man, what can I say? I think No. 28 is possibly one of the best songs ever written. Got hooked on the band from the first time I heard that track. Just when you don’t think it can get any better, they switch gears for the bridge. It’s too good. We actually referenced their music video when we were coming up with the concept for the video for our song Two Of Us.

Ooft, tough to just pick one but bands like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Tame Impala and Methyl Ethel are killing it. I feel these guys are leading the charge with new kinds of sounds and great fucking songs. When I hear what these bands are doing it just further cements my pride and admiration for music born from the Perth scene.

Methyl Ethel wrote their big, excellent, super simple masterpiece early on called Twilight Driving and never needed to match it after that. I liken it to Radiohead’s Creep early in their careers. Since then they’ve been musically adventurous. They go weird, but it’s incredible too. Ubu being an example of a cracker that doesn’t need any cheese. Some bands only ever go weird because they could never master the simple banger first.
