What you need to know about your BIGSOUND speakers.

Position/Title: CEO/Senior Booking Agent at Select Music

How did you first become involved in the music industry and how did you end up where you are today? I started out as a musician playing guitar and singing in numerous original and cover acts. I used to do all of the business side of things running those acts and it ended up with me starting my own agency. And I’m here now due to a lot of hard work.

What's been the biggest change in the music industry you've seen over the past 12 months? The impact of streaming has been significant and I feel has been very positive for artists' live careers. 

What do you think will be the biggest issue affecting the music industry in the next 12 months and why? Mental health and self-regulation. While it’s based around creatives, we still need to work on the balance of being as professional as we can and not stifle the processes that make this industry so exciting.

What advice would you give young practitioners in your area starting out today? Get a good psychologist! Learn to meditate and calm your mind. You will need to do this if you want to progress further into the music industry. Take time out for yourself and have a hobby that means you don’t think about work while you’re doing it.

What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the BIGSOUND conference and what are you hoping that people will be able to learn from your panel? I will be part of a panel on making sure everyone is paid fairly which should make for an interesting discussion. I just hope people are entertained and walk out thinking they learnt something.

What advice do you have for BIGSOUND first-timers? Just understand that most people at BIGSOUND are rushing around trying to get to meetings, see panels and acts. Don’t take it personally if anyone seems rude. Drop them an email. 

What's your favourite BIGSOUND memory? And which artist was your standout performance? For me personally, my favourite memories are the acts that I have signed for bookings which include San Cisco, Thelma Plum, Baker Boy and Adrian Eagle to name just a few.
