'It’s Hard To Push Back The Fear': Jay Watson Steps Into The Light As GUM

Album Focus: Tim Whitt

Album title? Geisel
Where did the title of your new album come from? Helen Geisel, the wife of Dr. Seuss, Ted Geisel. She tragically took her own life in 1967, leaving a public note to her husband which started my journey towards making this album.
How many releases do you have now? Three — When Nerds Do Hip Hop (2003), Heartache & Drum Breaks (2015),
Geisel (2017).
How long did it take to write/record? The process took about a year from the first stages to full completion.
Was anything in particular inspiring you during the making? Thinking about my place in Adelaide city and the wider world, how I felt I influenced what was around me and the things and people that influenced me in everyday life.
What's your favourite song on it? The first track, Movement + Motion. It was the first track I started and embodies what I wanted to create
Will you do anything differently next time? Plenty, though I don't know what sort of music I'll be making next. It could be more sound driven work or maybe death metal or hard electronic bangers.
When and where is your launch/next gigs? October 14, as part of a mobile app with a walking City Soundtrack Tour to specific sites around Adelaide CBD to listen to the songs in a fully immersive environment.
