The Sapphires, ABC Dominate Top Screen Awards Nominations

ABC TV dominates the commercial networks

The Jessica Mauboy-starring The Sapphires has picked up 12 nominations for next year's Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (the AACTAS) – the most of any production.

In the second year of the peak film and television awards' rebrand – they were previously the AFI Awards – The Sapphires has been nominated for Best Film, Best Direction (Wayne Blair), Best Lead Actress (Deborah Mailman), Best Lead Actor (Chris O'Dowd) and Best Supporting Actress (Jessica Mauboy) as well as a number of craft awards.

Second in terms on nominations is Jonathan Teplitzky's Burning Man, which has picked up ten nominations including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Original Screenplay, Best Lead Actor (Matthew Goode), Best Supporting Actress (Essie Davis) and a number of craft awards.

The Paul Kelly documentary Paul Kelly – Stories Of Me has picked up a nomination for Best Sound In A Documentary, while the Best Original Music Scores have been identified as Antony Partos for 33 Postcards, Guy Gross for A Few Best Men, Michael Yezerski for Mental and Matteo Zingales and Jono Ma for Not Suitable For Children.

As far as the networks go, the ABC have easily picked up the most nominations with 37 for ABC1, two for ABC2 and two for ABC3 – 41 in total. SBS have been given 11 nods, Nine Network managed ten, Network Ten nine and the Seven Network three. Foxtel picked up four across its channels.

This year the event has moved from the Sydney Opera House to the The Star Event Centre, with the Awards Ceremony taking place Wednesday 30 January. The main event will be preceded by the Awards Luncheon – at the same venue – Monday 28 January. The Luncheon will see the presentation of the AACTA Raymond Longford, which this year is going to producer Al Clark.
