WA Government Throws Serious Support Behind Local Music Scene

The WA State Government has unveiled a $3 million initiative that will support local artists across the state.

The Contemporary Music Fund will help talent in the state “produce and promoter” their music, with thousands of jobs to be created in the process.

The funding will roll out over the next four years, with new grants available to musicians that will assist with marketing, promotional, performance, recording and production costs.

"A strong and vibrant local music industry is a key driver of the vibrant nightlife that we would like to grow in our city, to create more entertainment options for both locals and tourists,” Premier Mark McGowan said.

Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman said the fund would help Western Australian artists develop a strong national and international presence.

"Western Australia has proven over the years that it has been home to a wonderfully talented group of musicians, bands and artists across genres and styles,” Templeman said.

"We want to make sure that the rest of the country and the world continues to hear and share the unique and amazing music which comes from one of the most isolated places on earth.”

The McGowan Labor Government has long championed the music scene, telling The Music earlier this year they wanted more live music venues in the state.

“We know that Perth is renowned for its live music and arts and I’d love to see more interstate and overseas visitors coming here to see the talent on offer,” McGowan said.

“Our reforms are all about creating a more vibrant city and cutting some of the red tape that has made it difficult for exciting new venues to open.”

The Contemporary Music Fund will be included in next week’s State Budget.
