"The crowd came with high hopes and Florence & The Machine delivered."
New Zealander Marlon Williams opened the night for Florence & The Machine with his Johnny Cash vibes and swivelling hips. The crowd was in awe of his overwhelmingly beautiful vocals that echoed in the arena as he sang Beautiful Dress. Party Boy changed this up with its fast-paced energy, giving the crowd a taste of what Williams could do in a 45-minute set.
Florence & The Machine kicked off their Australian tour in Perth, RAC Arena packed and buzzing with excitement. Barefoot in a beige, lace gown, Florence Welch jumped straight into June from the band’s 2018 album High As Hope. At first the stage didn't look big enough for Welch and her eight-piece band, but once she got into Hunger and Between Two Lungs she was airborne, her leaps and twirls making the space hers.
When performing, Welch is a mesmerising and fierce frontwoman, but in between tracks she was quite shy, especially when she spoke. Her voice was soft as a child's as she discussed South London Forever and Patricia, about her early alcoholic years and her love for Patti Smith respectively. Dog Days Are Over saw Welch ask the crowd if they would turn their phones off and if they wanted to dance with her before the arena erupted into a mass of bodies jumping with their hands in the air. We could feel the floor move. The energy was crazy, and only grew once Florence & The Machine delighted the crowd with a new song called Moderation, which gave off 2011's Ceremonials vibes.
During Delilah, Welch walked to the back of the mosh. Before we could blink, she immersed herself in the crowd, dancing and singing with them. Their smiles of joy graced the screen as they danced, making the rest of the crowd wish they hadn't booked seats. As Welch left the mosh, the crowd desperately tried to reach out and touch her, but she wasn’t returning to stage just yet. She got up on the front barrier, launching into What Kind Of Man. Holding on tight to fans hands and shaking her ginger locks in their faces, Welch gave her fans an intimacy large concerts almost never achieve. Then she was back on stage and bidding us goodbye, but we all knew the encore would be coming. Big God and Shake It Out finished off the night with endless confetti filling the arena. The crowd came with high hopes and Florence & The Machine delivered, leaving all of us blown away.
