Lower Spectrum - Traces EP
A beautiful collection of downtempo electronica.. It's almost hard to believe there is music like this coming out of my hometown. At a time when everyone's doing the trap/half-time/bouncey/wavey beats thing (and quite often doing it well, mind), Traces, the new EP from Fremantle-via-Melbourne producer Lower Spectrum is a breath of fresh air. We covered the first single from it, Khlever, A FEW WEEKS AGO, and now the full release is available via iTunes/Bandcamp, with options for a purchase on clear vinyl for the purists out there. And to be honest this is something I'd like to have in physical form - it's the kind of music best put on and left on, a six-track journey for your ears and mind. I mentioned it before (basically because it's the only comparison I can draw upon), but it has some very Nicolas Jaar-esque vibes about it that I am completely in love with. Opener Levity grows and grows into a brilliant drum breakdown, Hex is all dark and dirty '80s sci-fi cinema soundscapes, and th

Troye Sivan - Happy Little Pill
Some great new music from a fresh-faced Perth 19-year-old.. We'll have to admit we hadn't heard of 19 years young Perth artist Troye Sivan until recently. This makes sense on one hand as the single we're rocking today - Happy Little Pill - is his debut release. But on the other hand, the kid has almost 900k fans on Facebook - yep, almost a million. We can probably put the latter down to the release of his song The Fault In Our Stars - released last year and selling upwards of 100,000 copies worldwide, with all proceeds going to a Perth children's hospital. A re-worked version of that song, along with Happy Little Pill will be found on his forthcoming debut EP release, TRXYE, due August 15. The EP promises five tracks of atmospheric pop, beats and ballads, citing the likes of Lana Del Rey, Lorde and Frank Ocean as influences, and you can hear a bit of each in Happy Little Pill below. Produced by Perth duo SLUMs, mixed down by Tom Elmhirst and Jason Cox (Gorillaz, Adele, Empire Of The Su

Teebs Australia/NZ Tour
One of Brainfeeders' finest is headed back down under.. The Operatives are a collective of multi-talented musicians and curators responsible for presenting tours of ground-breaking international talent and a platform for emerging artists to be heard, and 2014 sees them celebrating a decade of killer events with the return of producer Teebs. Whether it's by the skateboard deck, paintbrush or on Roland SP 404 pads, Teebs is all about positive energy, the LA-based beatsmith's music swirls like his artwork; delicate and richly composed, with textured expressions that have been garnering fans since debut album Adour. His latest EP, Estara, is another slice of gold: The tour kicks off in Melbourne on the first day of August, and you can grab some tickets by clicking the picture below:

Introducing - CHIME
A couple of dudes from the west coast making some very chill trap.. CHIME are... well if I told you it'd defeat the purpose of this blog post. Get to know 'em once you've had a listen to their cracking first single, Phase, available for free download below: Tell us a bout about yourselves? We're both attending WAAPA studying a branch of classical composition and that's how we actually met. Leon also attended SAE and did a course on Audio Engineering and Music Production based on his dubstep background and I (Aaron) stayed at school and started producing trance/big room music early last year.  What kinda tunes we talkin’?It varies. We have written tunes from the "Australian sound" style to deep house to trap. Mainly influenced by guys like Flume, LDRU, Slumberjack etc etc.  Production/writing process:  We both use Ableton which makes life a lot easier. We catch up every Tuesday night and work on tunes and bounce back and forth between ideas we've had/made during the week. Then we ciphe

Fractures - Won't Win (Japanese Wallpaper Remix) *Premiere*
A couple of the country's most exciting young producers combine.. It's no secret we're big fans of too-young-to-be-this-good Japanese Wallpaper, having featured his tracks Waves feat. Papa Knight and Breathe In feat. Wafia on this blog, and several times on our old website (RIP). So when the opportunity arose to premiere a remix he's done for another of Australia's incredibly bright young things in Fractures, the answer was obviously a huge yes. No slouch himself, Fractures has been killing it ever since his debut single Twisted turned Australia's ears towards his dark, soulful and alluring sounds, garnering praise from the likes of Gotye and Chet Faker. Following a nasty neck injury during 2013, Fractures AKA Mark Zito has bounced back with another typically beautiful single in Won't Win. It sees him joining the Splendour In The Grass line-up, supporting Wild Beats and embarking on a series of EP launch shows (some of which JW supports), before hitting up BIGSOUND later in the year. C

RUFUS - Atlas Light/Dark Deluxe Edition
One of last year's best albums is about to give a whole lot more.. Much the way Flume seemed to dominate the end of 2012/beginning of 2013, the second half of last year steaming into 2014 felt like Sydney trio RÜFÜS' time when it came to Australian electronic music. In a world full of beatsy solo producers the three-piece released their debut album Atlas, filled with four-to-the-floor indie-dance rhythms, some darker housey stylings and a heap of anthems. Atlas debuted at #1 on the ARIA Charts, reached gold status, racked up three tracks in triple j’s Hottest 100 and has been nominated for multiple ARIA awards. Since then they've been dominating summer music festivals, along with their own sold-out national tours, no doubt peaking with their upcoming headline slot on the Mixup Stage at Splendour In The Grass. To celebrate a pretty fucking brilliant year, they've announced the release of the Atlas Light/Dark Deluxe Edition, a double album that celebrates the tracks from the original re

ODESZA - In Return
One of CIRCO's many bright lights have announced a new album.. For some members of the Pilerats office, getting ODESZA to Australia had been a project some three years in the making. To finally have them over last month to play at CIRCO Festival was, to put it bluntly, fucking awesome. Three years of incredible music, a bunch of free EPs/releases, their beautiful track Sun Models killing it on the first ever Pilerats RAT PACK COMPILATION, and talk of a cracking live show all lived up to the hype when they rocked probably the biggest crowd the trippy as shit Cannonball Stage had all day. The fact they were a couple of super-nice dudes (read an interview with them HERE) was just a bonus, and we like to think this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the duo and Australia for years to come. They've just announced their new album, In Return, is due for release September 9, 2014, and have dropped a new track to celebrate - Memories That You Call (feat. Monsoonsiren).
