Wil Anderson
Wilegal is somewhat new territory for Wil Anderson; for the first time, he's got a tale to tell. Instead of the familiar satirical analysis of germane news and current affairs, the comedian is turning to his own experiences in long-form, going start to finish on one epic ripping yarn.
Taking the narrative from the events leading to, of, and immediately after his arrest in Wagga Wagga, Anderson puts his knack for storytelling on full display. Interspersed with insights to the ABC's problem-solving department, and his revelation on icing sugar as a standalone taste sensation, the story dips in and out of that fateful plane journey and gives an earnest insight to Anderson's way personal perspective.
While Wilegal feels like a natural progression in the comic's repertoire, the show definitely has some pacing problems. Some jokes feel out of place or shoehorned into the narrative without adding much of value, and at certain key moments, after finding a poignant and satisfying cadence to an anecdote, Anderson pushes on further with unnecessary additions. Granted, a show that opts for this sort of narrative focus will often bring up some teething issues along the way, but Anderson is known for his slick, rounded delivery, so to see him struggle here is a surprise.
That said, it's indisputable that Anderson is one of the most naturally gifted comic minds of his generation, and this show will undoubtedly get better over the course of MICF. For now, it may be a little up in the air, but with time to iron out these wrinkles, Wilegal will surely become a knockout show.
