Whitefall ProfileWhitefall are Canberra’s newest and perhaps most promising band. While that sentence may seem a stretch, to this reviewer's humble impression, it’s a true sentiment regardless.
From the beginning, debut EP ‘Origins’ is heavy, impactful and full of purpose. Kicking things off with an instrumental, almost overture of sorts, the initial track provides scope for the EP's eventual design.
Fortunately, the rest of the five-track offering delivers on that potential as there are numerous and select moments of chaos and brutality. The tracks aren’t anything revolutionary, or even anything new (it is a well played out genre, after all), but it’s an honest take on one of Australia’s most popular styles.
Instrumentally, the band obviously takes inspiration from groups such as Northlane or In Hearts Wake, as heavy chugs and ambient breakdowns are ever present. There are a few standouts on this little offering, but none compare to the EP’s lead single, ‘Causality’, which features TesseracT's Dan Tompkins. The song shows the bands' possibilities for local, and even international, success in the future. Hopefully we can see Whitefall stick around for a little while longer.
Whitefall show a lot of potential on this debut EP, and while they aren't exactly jaw-dropping or overly spectacular right now, if they keep growing and going in this chosen direction, the results will be worthwhile.
