South London soul artist Rosie Lowe offers up her new single, ‘Who’s That Girl?’, along with a stunning video to match. The video gives us a hint as to what to expect from her upcoming debut album, release later this month via Paul Epworth’s Wolf Tone label and Universal Music Australia.
After a couple of well received tracks last year Lowe has gone from strength to strength, headlining a slot at Annie Mac Collected in December, earning a ranking in Dazed & Confused’s ‘Dazed 100’ and supporting the legendary Neneh Cherry on her UK tour in January. The great work continues on Lowe’s new video for which she worked with award-winning directing duo Bison, who can count Coldplay and London Grammar as clients. The video takes the rhythmic and vocal cues of the track to trigger jarring lights and projections, connecting the audio and visuals together well.
Lowe has already worked with notable electronic and soul artists, namely Kwes and The Invisible’s Dave Okumu, but it’s on ‘Who’s That Girl?’ that she really comes into her own; the track is certainly very personal, dealing with the fallout of a friend who let Lowe down when she needed her most. We see these themes of illusory identity reflected in the classy lament, as Lowe slowly shifts and sways hidden under a thin semi-transparent veil. The video is one built around dark and light with shadows flickering against strong glowing backlights and sudden strobes. Eerie blues and greys surround the gyrating Lowe as she comes in and out of focus, fading into a full screen white out and then emerging again silhouetted against the golden stage lights.
The production on the track is exquisite. It’s a slow builder that escalates into a hearty synth-heavy finale where we see Lowe liquesce into the veil and disappear into the floor from which she emerged.
