Melbourne-based OSCAR KEY SUNG has dropped his latest track, the deliciously seductive ‘Skip’, and yes, it delivers. The video is the second collaboration between Oscar and cinematographer Ryan Alexander Lloyd, who has previously worked with artists including Courtney Barnett and Battleships.
The video opens with a couple of dark shots of unidentifiable streets, in which Oscar looks appropriately mysterious and contemplative as he sings, “I don’t connect with anyone like with you”, setting the tone for the rest of the clip. It is interesting to note that the first and last shots are the same, except in the last we almost see Oscar get run over by a couple of cars (thankfully this doesn’t happen).
He seems in his element against the black and white metropolitan backdrop, almost like a modern James Dean. His smooth, unique vocals and polished, chill tones create a nice balance with the darkness of the clip, while the almost empty urban environment suggests a calmness and loneliness that is reflected in the music as well. The overall effect is fresh, sultry and somewhat nostalgic.

Oscar seems to be declaring his affinity for cityscapes, given that the previous collaboration between him and Ryan also featured a futuristic-looking urban landscape. Perhaps what appeals to him is the desire for finding meaning or a sense of self or belonging in these built up environments that can make you feel both included and isolated at the same time. Either way, there is no denying that this video taps into a kind of aesthetic beauty of urban life and this is amplified even more by the song. His beats and sounds are modern and part of a new wave of music that may come to define this era.
Oscar Key Sung will release his second EP, Altruism on May 1.
