Sydney producer MUTO has returned with an eerie new video for his most recent single, ‘Say Nothing’ ft. Emerson Leif. It comes off the back of what has been a seriously impressive last few months for MUTO, including a huge 31-date tour of his own, supporting Odesza in Europe and playing at two Bigsound showcases.
Directed by Lexi Kiddo, best known for directing music videos for Flaunt, Breton and Idyll, the video transposes the mellow vibes of the track into a more sinister context. Inspired by films like Ex Machina, Never Let Me Go and Yorgos Lanthimos, the video delves into themes of dystopia and humanity, set on a modern-looking farm where three brothers live with a mysterious elderly woman.
Visually, the video fits the relaxed, almost lethargic nature of the song, with numerous long and wide shots capturing events in slow motion. The colour scheme is washed out and bland, evoking the tropes of a highly processed and unnatural dystopian society and contrasting nicely with the vivid tone of the music. It’s a very aesthetically pleasing accompaniment to the track, affected only by the surreal story being told that, at its conclusion, leaves more questions than answers.
It’s been a big six months for MUTO, with ‘Say Nothing’ reaching #1 on the iTunes Electronic Chart and his other tracks reaching a combined 4 million streams on Spotify. He’s rounding out this Spring with a spot at Newcastle’s This That festival on November 4th, so if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to see one of Sydney’s most exciting electronic artists, now is your chance!
