Live Review: Jessica Says' ode to pills popped on 'Xanax Baby'
Leading into into her national tour, true queen of melodrama Jessica Says releases her pill poppin' ode to the high life with the video for 'Xanax Baby'
Lorde may be releasing Melodrama soon but JESSICA SAYS has been the queen of true melodrama for some time now. She’s got it all - the image, the voice and down-right melancholy lyrics that’ll lead you into your own shallow pit of despair. Where Lorde’s melodrama lingers in the relatable mundane life experiences, Jessica lilts as a starlet, tear-sodden and begrudged. In the lead up to Do With Me What U Will national tour, Jessica Says has released music video for ‘Xanax Baby’ – a tale of addictive love.
It’s a tale as old as time: Boy meets Girl, Girl has already met Xanax – both are detrimental to general well being but only one can be relied upon. So, in a necessary escape from the addictive and unreliable nature of love, Girl and Xanax flee to the countryside to regain the intimacy of trust. It’s this tongue-in-cheek, woe-ridden smile that captures ‘Xanax Baby’ – easily, it could be compared to a Lana Del Rey song, flitting with similar themes, styles and overall package but it doesn’t romanticise the way that Lana does. Jessica Says isn’t curtailing her lyrics with a coy grin, it’s not a performance for a Man, he’d be billed after Xanax, before the wine that washes it down but drunkenly misspelled all the same.

The music video clip itself, directed by Geoffrey O'Connor, is entirely in hazy and subdued tones, a true Xanax daze. It follows Jessica but more like a shadow rather than locking in on her. Visually it is on theme – capturing the altered reality of prescription drug usage. Highlights include the somewhat sexy bath shot that ends up with her cutting herself to little fuss while shaving and the final shots in which she strolls the beach in a white silk robe, before laying down in the shrubbery. It’s all along the lines of how Jessica and the love of her life, Xanax glide through their days together, aimlessly floating through the drug haze.
Jessica Says Do With Me What U Will LP was released on May 19th and will be followed by a national tour with a host of amazing supports. The album is available digitally and on pink vinyl. Jessica Says is one of Australia’s coolest alternative pop darlings and any day now, big media will jump on board and sing the accolades that are so rightly earned.
