Live Review: BIGSOUND Live: Waax!

An extended instrumental opener that sets bones rattling and brains humming

More WAAX More WAAX

Buzzworthy Brissy-bred five-piece Waax! need not even utter a word to ensnare the members of the already significant audience gathered here to see them.

Dipping their toes in the water with an extended instrumental opener that sets bones rattling and brains humming, it's not long before any semblance of restraint is out the window. Enchanting singer/keyboardist Marie DeVita is nothing shy of a revelation, demonstrating with sensual, casual aplomb her expert grasp on vocal delivery both demure and inwardly inflected as well as loud, rambunctious, torn-at-the-edges howling.

She and her bandmates are a sight to behold from start to finish, each individual part proving more than worth a dedicated observation, from DeVita's evocative dance moves and hair-tousling to both guitarists conveying the sense they might actually just be rock music incarnate during fan-favourite standout What You Like - and, as a whole, Waax! prove a simply irresistible prospect, well worth the earlyish start to the night.
